FALLBROOK AAUW MENTORING PROGRAM
The Fallbrook branch of AAUW has created a mentorship program for girls who are part of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program at Fallbrook High School and whose teachers have recommended them. To remain in good standing in the AVID program, they must maintain a high grade-point average, take high level academic courses, perform community service for a minimum of 50 hours per year, and commit to pursue admission to a four-year
university.
On top of all of that, these high performing students agree to participate in our mentorship program, where they are paired with an AAUW member who works with them from grade 10-12, providing guidance, support, and new opportunities. The program is a benefit for both the students and the mentors.
WHAT IS THE AAUW MENTORSHIP PROGRAM?
A coming together of professional women and college bound high school girls.
WHY MENTORSHIP?
¨ To support college-bound students.
¨ To promote success in college and beyond.
¨ To support goal achievement.
¨ To expand the range of experience for mentees
¨ To provide exposure to role models.
WHAT ARE THE ACTIVITIES?
¨ Group: Experiences such as visits to cultural places or events.
¨ Individual: Activities that interest you and your mentee.
HOW MUCH TIME COMMITMENT DOES IT TAKE?
¨ Group activities range from 4-6 a year. Some take a few hours, a few a full day.
¨ Individual activities are up to you and your mentee as to frequency and length.
WHAT DO I GET OUT OF IT?

Our 2023-24 year was a busy one. Here are the highlights.
November 2023: Outdoor Screening of movie Hidden Figures
The AAUW mentorship group held its Christmas party in the beautiful home of Patty Carlson. Lunch was provided by the mentors for the 14 mentees who attended. After lunch, they were invited to play a holiday book game. Former mentee, Alicia Tomas, shared her college experiences with the girls and then following the gift exchange was the cookie exchange . There were enough to provide everyone with cookies to take home.
Saturday, February 24 , 2024 – Fallbrook HS Folklorico dancers
Friday, March 1, 2024, AAUW FALLBROOK SPONSORS A YEARLY SPEECH CONTEST. The participants were offered coaching sessions after school to write and prepare their speeches. In the end, 6 girls delivered powerful speeches about women in history who achieved beyond expectations and the lessons we can learn from their accomplishments. Members of the Fallbrook Toastmasters served as judges.
SUNDAY APRIL 28, 2024, ARTS in THE PARK /Rally for Children. Mentors, members, and mentees help in AAUW clay art station At Live Oak Park. Member Carolyn Thom leads this event each year and enlists helpers from the Mentorship Group. Students are able to earn community service hours for volunteering.
